A Golden Connection: Patrick and Debbie

For this month’s Golden Connection, we are excited to highlight the bond between Patrick and his companion, Debbie. Patrick, originally from Indiana, has lived in Raleigh since 1966, and he’s witnessed the city’s remarkable growth over the years. After completing graduate school, Patrick worked at NC State in student administration, but when it comes to sports, his loyalty lies with Notre Dame. Reflecting on his life, Patrick credits red wine and a balanced lifestyle for his longevity, and now, as he enjoys his retirement, he’s grateful for the care he receives through Golden Harmony.

Patrick speaks warmly of Debbie, his weekly companion, appreciating the time they spend together and the many ways she supports him. From grocery shopping to helping with day-to-day tasks, Patrick values Debbie’s willingness to assist with anything he needs. Most of all, he cherishes their comradery, noting how her visits brighten his week. Though Patrick describes himself as someone who takes time to connect with others, the bond he’s formed with Debbie speaks to the trust and comfort they’ve built together.

Debbie’s path to caregiving began long before her time with Golden Harmony. Having worked as a lead secretary in Wake County Public Schools, Debbie’s career has always been centered around helping others. Her inspiration for working with older adults stems from her personal experience watching her parents age, and she finds deep fulfillment in supporting those who may not have other means of help. With Patrick, she feels especially rewarded by his gratitude. For Debbie, even simple tasks like grocery shopping with Patrick become meaningful experiences, and the joy of introducing him to her own family was a memorable moment for them both.

Outside of her work, Debbie is dedicated to her own family, having been married for 42 years, with two daughters and four grandchildren who all live nearby. When she’s not with her family or working with clients, she enjoys reading and relaxing at the beach with her beloved Aussie Doodle, Cabi.

The relationship between Patrick and Debbie is a shining example of what we strive to create at Golden Harmony. It’s not just about providing care, but about building connections that enhance the lives of both our clients and companions. Patrick praises the service Golden Harmony provides, calling it a “great thing for retired folks like me.” The mutual respect and warmth between Patrick and Debbie is truly heartening, and we’re grateful for the Golden Connection that they have become.
