Golden Connection: Alice & Carolyn
This month, we’re shining a light on a duo whose friendship embodies the heart of Golden Harmony — Alice and her companion Carolyn. Over the years, these two have built a bond rooted in mutual respect, easy conversation, and genuine care.
From Busy Schedules to Meaningful Visits
Before joining Golden Harmony, Carolyn was deeply immersed in raising her four children, ranging in age from 10 to 22. Becoming a companion offered her a different rhythm of life — one filled with rich stories, quiet moments, and heartfelt conversations. “Our visits are a nice change of pace from the busy, hectic daily life of raising four kids,” she shares.
Alice, who moved to Raleigh in 1985, first connected with Golden Harmony after her knee replacement surgery made errands more difficult. “I didn’t need constant help, just someone to help with appointments and the grocery store,” she explains. That’s when her daughter helped her connect with Golden Harmony and Carolyn.
From the start, there was an instant ease between the two. “Carolyn was so easy to talk to,” Alice says. “We hit it off right away.”
Everyday Moments That Matter
Whether it’s running errands or visiting the library, Carolyn has always approached her time with Alice with patience and flexibility. “She was willing to go along with whatever I wanted to do,” Alice says gratefully.
For Carolyn, those errands turned into opportunities to celebrate life together — like when Alice couldn’t wait to hear if Carolyn’s son had gotten into NC State. “As soon as I walked in, she said, ‘OK, I can’t stand it anymore — did he get in?’” Carolyn recalls with a smile. “She was just as excited as I was.”
A Friendship That Feels Like Family
Their time together is filled with shared stories, laughter, and mutual admiration. “We’ve formed a lasting friendship,” Carolyn says. And for Alice, that friendship is built on kindness, curiosity, and support. “We get along, we can chat easily, and she’s always willing to help,” Alice shares.
Alice’s life has been rich with purpose — from graduate school to a paralegal program at Meredith, to combining her nursing and legal training at Dix Mental Hospital. She’s also deeply proud of her daughter and grandchildren. Through all the chapters of her life, Alice knows the key to strong relationships: “It’s a lot of give and take. You have to compromise, not give up, and work towards it together.”
It’s clear that Alice and Carolyn have done just that. Their connection reminds us that with a little patience, shared stories, and kindness, companionship becomes something much deeper — friendship.
