How Companion Care Gives Time for Stronger Relationships
Supporting senior independence is at the heart of the Golden Harmony mission: “To care for the well-being of older adults and enrich lives by providing exceptional home care services that promote independence, meaningful engagement, and wellness for Triangle-area seniors.”
This month, we’re recognizing National Senior Independence Month. It’s a chance to acknowledge home care services that allow older adults to stay independent, engaged, and active in their daily lives.
“National Senior Independence Month is a month-long observance of seniors and the resources that help them live full, active, and engaged lives. With roots stretching back to the Industrial Revolution, this is a chance to support older adults in the community.” – Elder Care Alliance
One benefit of senior independence is the gift of time. When day-to-day responsibilities of care are supported, families can focus on spending time together, enjoying one another, and strengthening their relationships.
We’ve gathered a few examples of how home care services like companion care contribute to senior independence and give families the gift of time. Here are five:

1. Companion care offers support at critical times.
Things can become complicated very quickly for families when life changes suddenly. Maybe both parents need assistance at once, or one needs memory care.
Caregivers can assist with the transitions and provide companion care that helps families manage all the moving parts. With the responsibilities of care addressed, family members can continue to enjoy the time they have with their loved ones.
One adult child shares, “We were in urgent need of help for my 85-year-old mother, and you hand-picked two lovely ladies who she absolutely adored. Thank you for taking such good care of my mom!”
2. It provides relief of fears and anxieties.
It can be challenging when you can’t always be there with your aging parents. You may have a lot of concerns — maybe even fears — about whether they should continue to live independently.
Home care services can ease many of those fears and other anxieties. Knowing a caregiver will be there can bring peace of mind. Then when you’re able to let go and trust the care provider to help, you’ll be able to make more time for laughing and sharing memories.

3. Home care makes complicated situations more manageable.
“Golden Harmony has provided our family with lovely caregivers as we’ve made transitions and companion care that have made such a difference in my parents’ lives. I truly don’t think we would have been able to manage everything without them.”
It’s not unusual for families to feel they should be the ones caring for an aging loved one. That instinct comes from love and a sense of responsibility. Many want to give back after years of being cared for themselves.
But as health needs change or unexpected situations arise, that responsibility can quickly become heavy for one person or family managing it alone. Having home care in place can ease the weight right away and provide support at a critical time.
It can also give families one of the most treasured gifts of all — time to spend with their loved ones.
4. Caregivers remain present when family members can’t be there.
One of the realities of our modern world is that children don’t always live near their aging parents. This means they’re dependent on others to look in on their loved ones.
One client says, “I live six hours away and your staff consistently checked in with me… This gave me great peace of mind.”
Companion care can fill in the gaps for families to give them the peace of mind to know the seniors they love are in good hands. When they do have time to spend together, they can simply enjoy it.

5. Home care provides high-level care when most needed.
Sometimes the care a loved one needs is beyond what a family member can provide.
“My dad and I could not have maintained such a high level of care for my mom without [Golden Harmony’s] help,” shares one family.
Our skilled caregivers complete a premier care provider education program to ensure they’re fully equipped to assist clients with diverse care needs. Each team member is trained in best practices and also receives specialized dementia care training from a certified dementia trainer.
When care needs grow, it can feel like a lot to handle. But your family doesn’t have to go through it alone. The right support can help keep your loved one’s independence intact—and give all of you more time together.
